Why Women Make Great Business-People
Women are not always given credit when due. Often, they are stuck with generalizations and negative comments that are hard to swallow. Interestingly, though, the very reasons for which others say women should not hold executive positions or seek entrepreneurial pursuits are the same attributes that would make women good at what they do. Believe it or not, many women have inbred traits that would help them to become successful entrepreneurs if they gave themselves the opportunity. Accordingly, I am going to discuss some of the reasons why women make great business-people.
One characteristic that many women exhibit, whether mothers or not, is the ability to nurture. They take ownership of their projects and help the people around them. Often, when you see women selling businesses, such as websites that they have created, they say it is hard because the sites are like their babies. Corporations see this trait as a negative because the powers-that-be believe that women will not readily delegate, but, I see this as a huge plus for female entrepreneurs. To my way of thinking, taking the project seriously, and working so hard for a specific result, is indicative of the level of focus, determination and tenacity that a woman can contribute. Surely, she will be more successful at completing the tasks and accomplishing the goals than someone who does not take ownership of the project.
Another reason why women make great business-people is the fact that they are flexible. Women tend to try and please everyone, and are willing to try different things. And this fact has been verified by many gender-related studies. It is not just the case of me, a female, saying so. Large corporations and independent organizations have conducted tests to determine whether men or women are better suited to innovation and creativity. It has been found that women tend to examine several options when confronted with issues. They can make more than one scenario work, whereas men tend to gravitate to one option as being the definitive answer.
One of the most important reasons why women make great business-people is most women possess the highly sought-after gift of being detail oriented. Regrettably, this is the same reason why women are stuck in administrative and support roles. They are excellent at ensuring all the pieces are in the right places. They organize tasks and carry out each task, regardless of how small or large, to completion. Loose ends are not an option. When undertaking an entrepreneurial role, this characteristic is perfect because most tasks are not fun, but rather, tedious and boring.
Finally, women have sacrificed plenty through the years. Traditionally, they have had to work harder because men were entitled to the jobs. Although this philosophy seems rather archaic now, it is still prevalent in many organizations. But hardships do make individuals stronger, and because women understand that this is still the way in most of the world, they have talents that make them great business-people. Women have learned to make do with what they have. They sacrifice personal feelings and possessions in favor of the long-term goals. Thus, when going into business, they are able to build things out of virtually nothing. They adapt to the situations thrown at them, which is a major reason why women make great business-people.
